Shih Tzu Dogs Are Old

February 21st, 2012

Until just a few years ago there were no Shih Tzu dogs in the United States. That seems odd when you realize that this is one of the very oldest breeds of dogs. It may seem odd but it is true. Now just a few years later this is one of the most popular breeds of dogs. Not only is it a popular breed but this is also a breed that is used to make lots of crosses too. Those various crosses are among the most sought after dogs as well, for whatever reason. To get all those crosses that are so in demand you need a lot of purebred dogs too. So just about the time that the rush for purebred Shih Tzu dogs had subsided a little bit you get a shift. Now you need a lot of Shih Tzu to produce all these so-called designer dogs. That makes the Shih Tzu still in demand but now more as a cross.

While arthritis affects joints, bones are left bare or with little cartilage and thus rub against each other causing much pain to an animal or affected human being. In addition, glucosamine stops the actual degeneration of cartilage in joints which is why a dog is better off treated while at early stages of the disease. The results of arthritis to animal bones are hazardous such that dogs may be lame for the rest of their lifetime. The Half Moon Betta Fish Comes in Dozens of Varieties

November 15th, 2011

I never imagined how fun it would be to learn about betta fish care, but it really is a lot better than I ever thought it would be. I read a fresh water fish book last week that outlined the amazing story about how these fish started inEast Asiaabout 2000 years ago, and how they were raised and bred to make new shapes and new colors. They have the bumblebee, the crosshatch, the polka betta, and the betta splendens varieties of bettas now. These are all man-made betta types, and each has unique colors and markings. I particularly love the half moon betta, because it is so streamlined, and because the dorsal fins and beard give it that look like it is a perfect circle. Perhaps the Asians envisioned this beauty when they started breeding them, and the sheer number of colors and different types of half moon bettas tells me that there was a lot of betta breeding going on.

Dog Training: Pack Leaders Read and Pick Dog Names

August 9th, 2011

Before you get the dog you’ve had on your family’s to-do list you would be well advised to get up to speed on dog training techniques. Because as much as you’d like the pooch to be self taught when it comes to socialization, leash training, indoor manners and the like, that’s not going to happen. So someone has to be the adult in this newly formed relationship. Someone has to be in charge. In other words someone has to be the pack leader. And since you can read and the dog won’t be able to, house training will be up to you.

And watching shows like the Dog Whisper on TV doesn’t count as intensive dog training. Such programs may give you hints and tips but to be well grounded you need to read books on training. Maybe get a video or two. Check out Amazon and see what you can find in that department.

If doggie duties are going to fall to you, do more than bone up on dog names. Get a feel for training from solid materials. Much like raising baby, raising puppy is going to be a time consuming and at times challenging chore. Much more so than simply doling out from your dog names short list, trust me.

Is Chaining a Dog Inhumane?

July 31st, 2011

It is grossly inhumane to chain or tether a dog, not only for the physical cruelty and external damage, but also the severe psychological damage to the dog. Dogs are social creatures and need to interact with humans who they see as a pack. You can’t restrict a dog’s movements. Every time he pulls on the chain and tries to escape, he hurts his neck. The physical damage to the dogs is that their necks are raw from the constant pulling on the chain, and sometimes even imbedded in the skin. An owner who can do this to a dog has probably never taken the dog to a vet and his dog skin problems are not being attended to. The dog’s coat is ratty and unkempt and there are sores on other parts of the body. If you don’t have it in your heart to care for a dog, don’t have one.

Dog Health Care Advancements Include Cleaning Dog Teeth and Flea and Tick Prevention

June 11th, 2011

The pet health care field has made much advancement, particularly in the area of prevention. Canine oral care products joined flea and tick products recently in providing dog lovers with the ability to avoid disease and unhealthy conditions suffered by dogs in the past. The first flea and tick oral treatment was introduced in 1995 and proved highly effective. Until that time, flea collars, dips, and powders were the main options. The next year brought two new topical treatments, Advantage and Frontline, made possible by a better understanding of flea biology, says Michael Dryden, D.V.M., professor of veterinary parasitology at Kansas State University. “These were the first truly effective spot-ons,” he says, because fleas had developed a resistance to existing chemicals. These products reduced the need for yearly vaccines that the American Animal Hospital Association guidelines indicated caused immune system stress and other health problems.

Dog owners know cleaning dog teeth has always been time consuming and limited in effectiveness. The bacterium that causes the plaque and tarter buildup on a dog’s teeth originates mainly below the gum line, out of the reach of tooth brushes. The numbers represent how difficult cleaning a dog’s teeth and gums is; periodontal disease inflicts over 90% of our pet dogs. Until recently pet owners had to rely on costly veterinarian dentistry to properly clean their dog’s teeth and eradicate the destructive bacteria that resides in the oral flora of canines. In 2005 bio-chemistry identified certain forms of natural substances that eliminate the harmful bacteria that cause plaque and tarter buildup, as well as bad breath in dogs. According to the head of research for VitaHound Labs, Bruce Harte, canine oral care sprays and gels developed by Petzlife can prevent harmful bacteria from developing below the gum line. The ability of these products to prevent the formation of plaque and tarter eliminates the need to brush, and the natural ingredients are safe for daily use without stressing the dog’s body.

Basset Hounds : Origins and Appearance

June 10th, 2011

Being a dog of the hound family, Basset Hounds can be considered a great sniffing dog. The dogs from the hound family range from big to small sizes, and the Basset hound would fall under the small to medium size. This does not make for the most distinguishable physical trait of the Basset Hound though.

A Rather Low Dog

The name Basset is of French origin. Translated as “low”, the addition of the suffix “-et” makes the name Basset come off as Rather Low. This physical attribute though, can be considered as an asset of Basset Hounds, as it makes them effective tracking dogs. Being close to the ground, they can easily detect scents and trails, which is the reason why their sense of smell is considered to be second behind that of Bloodhounds. This can lead to some basset hound health problems.

Physical Appearance

The being low of a Basset Hound can also be attributed to its having short legs. It makes them look short when they are standing on four legs. However, when they rise up on two, people are often surprised to discover how long a Basset Hound can be. The short legs don’t normally hold them up for too long and cannot be effective for swimming at long paces.

Some other basset hound information you should be aware of is they cannot be judged on certain colors, as breed standards often cover a great number of such. They are generally tri-colored though, in shades that are black, tan, and white, mixed with other shades in spots such as red, honey, lemon, gray, and blue. Their coat is also short, which makes for rare shedding. It also makes the Basset Hound easy to care for when it comes to grooming, since brushing and bathing needs to be done only occasionally.

Another thing that makes the Basset Hound quite distinguishable is its skin. While most dogs have plump and tight skin, the basset hound has a lot of loose skin that hang around their bodies, which are known to make wrinkles. This might make their eyes appear sad, and might make for a lonely demeanor. The long, soft ears also add to this look. The trailing ears though, come with a use. As with other hounds that have long ears, these are used to flap scents on the ground, helping them with tracking. It also traps the scent that the Basset Hound is tracking closer to the nose, helping them identify such scents easily from other scents.
