On that day my family is the sponsor for the flowers and candles to be given as gift and offer for the mass. I have a family reunion in a few months. While I am excited to see everyone, I’m not that excited about the way I look. I haven’t gained a lot of weight per se since my family last saw me but I have fallen off the wagon with my work out regimen. Let’s just say I’m not terribly overweight, but doughy, if you will. (At least I FEEL doughy!!)

So, how to get rid of dough boy by the end of the summer? Obviously, I will continue eating well and try to do some cardio exercise at least three times per week for overall conditioning. Hamstring Tight? You May Have a Low Grade Strain

A hamstring strain would have to be one of the most frustrating injuries an athlete can sustain. I play Australian rules football and the injury has kept me out for a total of 6-7 games this season and I’m only 21 years of age. A hamstring strain has a specific way to be treated, and I’ve been to all sorts of physio’s with no real success in recovering from the injury. Lately I decided to see a sports doctor and they outlined a protocol which I should follow in order to see a full 100% recovery and minimize my chances of re-injury. So far their advice has proven effective.

For those of you who are unaware, A hamstring strain is when a tear or tears occur to the muscle fibers of the hamstring. Strains are graded into three different categories:

Grade 1: Consists of microscopic tears of the muscle which probably won’t cause much discomfort doing daily activities, may have a little swelling and walking will most likely be unaffected.

Grade 2: Is a more serious tear to the muscle however not completely torn through, in this case the subject will most likely experience pain when walking, swelling, and experience discomfort in numerous different movements in the affected leg.

Grade 3: Is the most severe case where there is a complete muscle tear. Symptoms are normally instant swelling, an inability to walk and intense pain of the affected muscle.

A grade one strain is one of the most common injuries in all sports across the globe and if not treated right, it can lead to persisting problems down the track which can, and has, ruined the career of many sportspeople. Elite sports persons will be at an advantage here, as they are likely to have professional medical staff to give them advice and assess their injuries on a daily basis. For all of us, we may just take the impression that our hamstring has tightened up and can be simply stretched or ran out, but in fact we have incurred a strain.

When I strained my hamstring during training it was a gradual tightness in the high part of the muscle that got worse and worse the longer I was active, as if someone was on either end of the muscle fiber playing a game of tug of war. I was sent to the trainer to get a rub hoping a massage would relieve the stress but I knew it was something more serious.

In this situation I was lucky I didn’t try and be the hero and run it out, otherwise I would’ve run the risk of having a complete hamstring blowout, potentially a season ending injury. Once you have a minor strain such as this, the chances of you doing this sort of injury increases substantially. And once you have torn a hamstring, research suggests that the chances of a re-injury is 30%. You don’t want to play with those odds.

After consulting many physiotherapists and sports medicine doctors I can say that both have similar approaches to tackling the injury rehabilitation process. It is so important that you take their advice religiously and don’t stray away from the program, otherwise you can set back your recovery a number of weeks. A good program should also incorporate a leg strengthening phase as it is imperative that you regain or increase strength in your hamstring muscles.

Preparing for Gym Class

This year, I have to take a physical education class in high school. The last time I had to take a gym class was in junior high school. I am really not looking forward to having to go.
